THE BIG PIPELINE QUESTION: When to Repair? When to Replace?

by The Pipeline Guy on January 5th, 2017 at 6:23 pm

when-to-repair-pipelines-when-to-replace-pipelines
There are many reasons why a pipeline needs to be repaired or a section of it replaced. These reasons can be broken down into five key categories:

1. vandalism
2. corrosion (internal and external)
3. nature (weather and temperature)
4. material failure (gaskets and welds)
5. accidents (boat anchors and construction equipment)

The above reasons can cause holes, cracks, thinning walls, dents, weak joints and, in the worst cases, a rupture. The question that then arises is: what is the best way to fix these problems?  Read this Excellent Article in World Pipelines Magazine Here.

Repairing Underwater Risers on Offshore Rigs Without Welding

by The Pipeline Guy on November 9th, 2016 at 5:01 pm

Repair of underwater risers on offshore rigs are an inherently safer project if you can do it without welding.  It’s also a faster and less expensive.  A product called the Riser Weld+End from PLIDCO is designed to simplify the replacement of underwater risers on offshore gas and oil lines–without welding underwater.  This fitting has additional clamping and thrust screws to provide a seal for high pressure and for resisting extreme end-pull. Installation is rapid. It’s socket-welded at the surface to the new replacement riser and lowered into the water. A diver cuts out the old riser, stabs the new fitting over the cut-off pipe, then tightens the clamping and thrust screws for a complete leakproof seal without welding.  The short video below tells you more.
